1858<50C> PR62 NGC. WB-101. Type One Reverse. A brilliant and carefully preserved piece that has chrome-like fields, as made. Cameo contrast is present but is prominent only when viewed from selected angles. The strike is good but not razor-sharp, a few stars and the eagle's left (facing) claw have not received a full blow from the dies.
In terms of their distribution, 1858 proofs are transitional. Proofs were struck in prior years, generally for presentation purposes rather than for sale to collectors. Select issues, such as 1856 Flying Eagle Cents, were restruck by the Mint for well placed collectors. Beginning in 1859, proofs were struck for distribution to collectors, and are scarce but affordable for modern numismatists. The 1858 proofs have an unknown mintage, and are significantly scarcer than the 1859 and subsequent issues. However, they are obtainable, while pre-1858 Seated Half proofs are very rare. Perhaps the decision to strike proofs for collectors was made in the later part of 1858, which would explain the small but collectible number of proof survivors. Population: 8 in 62, 38 finer (9/05).
