1858 3CS PR65 PCGS. Since Breen (1977) states that the diagnostic die striations of this issue fade with subsequent impressions, this Gem quality survivor is most likely an early die state. The die polish lines (as produced) in the obverse field are discernible with the naked eye. All devices are sharply defined, although we note that the obverse star is indistinct in a few isolated areas due to vigorous lapping of the die. Both sides are richly toned in charcoal shades that yield to a swirl of lilac patina in the center of the reverse. Perhaps 60-75 proof 1858 Trimes were originally produced, and the number of survivors is thought to be in the vicinity of three or four dozen coins. Precious few of the latter grade as finer as this important representative. Population: 18 in 65, with a mere six finer (9/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
