<B>1858 3CS PR65 NGC.</B></I> Reported mintages of the 1858 proof three cent silver coins range from between 60 to 75 pieces (Walter Breen, 1977) to 300 plus examples (2008 <I>Guide Book</B></I>). The number is probably somewhere in between, judging from the 175 or so examples certified by NGC and PCGS. Whispers of cobalt-blue and lilac toning adorn bright, well preserved surfaces on the PR65 specimen offered in this lot. The design elements exhibit the result of an exquisite strike, as no areas reveal hints of weakness. Excessive die polishing has removed a couple of small segments of the star outlines in the lower left obverse quadrant, and associated die striations are noted in the obverse fields.
