1858 $3 PR63 Cameo Polished Uncertified. A seldom-seen issue, the first proof specimen of this date and denomination that we have offered since 1997. The fields appear polished, but the overall effect is nonetheless pleasing and not overly artificial, with cameo devices on both sides and canary-gold color. A personal inspection is suggested. The business strike mintage of this issue is a tiny 2,133 pieces, with 15 proofs estimated to have been produced. This rare and interesting issue derives from the first year that the U.S. Mint began publicly advertising proof sets for public sale under Mint Director James Ross Snowden. Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1989 comments, "The existence of more ones and threes than other gold proofs of this and some subsequent years suggests that a market for those individual denominations existed over and above the market for proof sets ... threes because of the very unusual denomination."

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
