<B>1858 25C Quarter PR67 NGC.</B></I> Ex: P. Kaufman. The Kaufman Superb Gem proof ranks high in the lineup of proof 1858 quarters, probably the finest known. It is the best ever certified by NGC over 20 years of certification. Historically billed as the first year that proofs were widely available, many collectors today begin collections of proofs with this year. Mintages were higher and so is demand.<BR> It seems that this year is the first where Mint records were kept regarding proof mintages, although that may not be the case. For much of the 20th century, a mintage figure of 80 proofs was used for the 1858 silver coins. However, this mintage figure did not originate with mint records, but rather, it seems to have originated with one of the Chapman brothers. Much effort has been expanded to arrive at an approximate mintage, especially for the proof-only silver dollar. It became obvious that the 80 coin figure was not correct when certified populations substantially exceeded that amount. Considerable time and energy has been spent by many to determine more accurate estimates of mintage.<BR> The base of the 1 is lightly doubled, and the final 8 appears to lean slightly to the right. Faint die lines connect the D and S and others connect the S and O. Both dies are otherwise well made with few diagnostic features. Briggs assigned proofs the variety number 5-E in his reference, although few of his diagnostics match this coin. The reverse is a new die not previously used, replacing the bulged die of 1856 and 1857.<BR> The obverse has a few minor lint marks, similar to most proof quarters of the date. The fields are deep mirrors beneath pale champagne toning with intense peripheral gold, lilac, and blue near the borders, especially on the obverse. A sharp strike is indicated by full design features and a high wire rim on both sides. Census: 1 in 67, 0 finer (6/07).<BR><I>Ex: Louis E.
