1858<25C> PR66 PCGS. In 1858, proof coins were made available for sale to the coin collecting public for the first time. Exact mintage data is unknown, although it is generally believed that about 100 of these pieces were actually sold, although the current Guide Book suggests a mintage of 300 coins, equal to the estimated number of proof 1858 silver dollars that were distributed. On the obverse, the base of the digit 1 is slightly doubled. This is a delightful Gem proof example with vibrant sky-blue and sea-green toning over deeply mirrored fields. The devices are lustrous and the contrast is sufficient that this piece might deserve a cameo designation. Population: 1 in 66, 0 finer (9/06).
