1858<25C> PR63 NGC. Briggs 5-E. Walter Breen, and Larry Briggs after him, recorded the mintage of 1858 Proof Quarters to be 80 coins, undoubtedly borrowing this figure from the long standing historically inaccurate record of 80 Proof Silver Dollars minted. Today, it is believed that the actual mintage of these coins was probably somewhere in the vicinity of 300 or so coins, although this is merely a guess. The 1858 Proof Quarter Dollars are possibly the most poorly made of all Proof issues from that period. Walter Breen reported this in his Complete Encyclopedia: "most proofs show multiple lint marks (incuse impressions from lint adhering to dies. Someone failed to wipe them clean before starting the press run)." The Reiver Collection coin shows extensive lintmarks on both sides, including a long depression on Liberty's left (facing) arm, down from the shoulder. Others appear in the fields on both sides. The upper reverse field has a modest lamination defect. The reverse has a die crack from the final S through the bottoms of OF and on to the base of the first A in AMERICA, and another from the border to the point of the top arrow, through the lower to arrows, and into the field above L and O in DOL. The design elements are all fully defined, and the devices are slightly lustrous with considerable cameo contrast, although this example was not designated as a Cameo Proof. Both sides are essentially untoned, save for hints of steel color on the rims.
