1858 $20 MS63 PCGS.
1858 $20 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Dallas Bank Collection. With the single exception of the 1859, the 1858 boasts the lowest mintage (211,714 pieces) of any P-mint double eagle from the 1850s. There are only 28 Mint State survivors from both NGC and PCGS, a few of which may represent resubmissions. We last offered an Uncirculated 1858-P twenty (an MS63 NGC representative) as lot 7354 in our 2002 Central States Sale. That coin brought an astonishing $23,000. This piece was once in Jeff Browning's collection of double eagles, and when that set was sold in 2001 this piece was described as, "Medium yellow gold in color; the obverse and reverse surfaces are satiny and smooth in most places. A couple of light copper toning spots are noticeable on the obverse, and a few others are scattered about the reverse. Struck on an imperfectly annealed planchet, with areas of roughness at the lower left on the obverse and around portions of the base of the reverse. Few this fine have appeared at auction in the past decade." The coin brought $14,950 and it was only graded Brilliant Uncirculated. In addition to the areas that show imperfect annealing on each side, the surfaces are wondrously clean and satiny, with full striking definition throughout. Population: 3 in 63, 0 finer (10/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
