1858<$20> MS63 NGC. With the single exception of the 1859, the 1858 boasts the lowest mintage (211,714 pieces) of any P-mint Double Eagle from the 1850s. Equally as rare as the 1855, 1856, 1857, 1863, and 1864, the 1858 is typically encountered in grades that range from XF40 through AU58. There are only 39 Mint State survivors at NGC and PCGS, a few of which may represent resubmissions. We have not recently handled an example as fine as the present Select BU survivor, and it is tied for finest certified honors with four similarly graded PCGS coins.
This is a satiny piece with striations in the fields that explain the modest semi-prooflike finish. The strike is needle sharp in all areas, and there are remarkably few obverse abrasions for the assigned grade. In fact, the only mentionable distractions are a group of scratches in the reverse field to the left of the eagle. A pleasingly colored, golden-rose representative of this conditionally challenging P-mint Twenty. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (6/05).
From The Edward O'Neill Collection of Liberty Double Eagles.
