1858 $20 MS61 NGC.<p>The 1858 is the eighth rarest Type One Philadelphia Double Eagle. It has the second lowest mintage figure of any Philadelphia issue from this decade and is most often seen in XF40 to AU50 grades. As with the 1855 through 1857 issues, the 1858 is rare and very underrated in Uncirculated. An estimated 15-25 pieces are known in this grade range with most examples no better than MS60-61. In MS62, the 1858 is very rare and extremely undervalued. The nicest example sold in recent years was the PCGS MS63 in the Bass III auction that realized $29,900. A Brilliant Uncirculated 1858 Double Eagle with slight mint-made obverse field roughness brought $14,950 in the October 2001 Dallas Bank Collection Sale. This bright orange-gold example has fields that show traces of semi-prooflikeness. The central devices are especially well detailed, but the peripheries (even on the reverse) are noticeably weak. Very lightly abraded for the grade with the only mentionable surface flaw being a milling mark located to the right of the eagle on the reverse.
