1858<$20> MS61 NGC. The Philadelphia Mint struck more than a million Double Eagles each year between 1850 and 1853, but mintages declined thereafter, and the 1858 production was a relatively small 211,714 pieces. The lower mintages were because of two factors. The weight of silver coins was reduced in 1853, which returned lower denominations to circulation. The San Francisco Mint opened for business in 1854, and gold rush bullion could be coined locally rather than shipped to the east coast. The 1858 is nonetheless available in XF and AU grades, but examples with unbroken luster and no highpoint wear are rarely encountered. The present well struck piece is surprisingly smooth aside from a cluster of light grazes above the WEN in TWENTY, and would provide a handsome addition to an advanced Double Eagle collection.
