1858<1C> Small Letters PR65 Cameo NGC. High Leaves Reverse. Snow-PR1. A heavily striated golden-tan specimen with fully defined features and noticeably greater contrast than is normally exhibited on this elusive proof striking. A glancing blemish is detected under TAT of STATES and another paper-thin mark is situated between the two Ns on the reverse. These aside, the coin is remarkably preserved and extremely flashy. The ultimate representative of either variant of the 1858 Cent must surely be one of the rare proofs. We do not know exactly how many specimen strikings of the Small Letters version were originally prepared by the Philadelphia Mint, but current numismatic wisdom points to an estimate of 100 pieces, of which perhaps 75 pieces survive today, which is approximately the same number of proof 1857s extant. It should be noted that proof Flying Eagle Cents from both 1857 and 1858 are considerably more difficult to locate than their more widely publicized brethren dated 1856. Census: 1 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (11/05).
