1858 1C Small Letters PR64 PCGS. PR-2. Examples of this die marriage are believed to have been produced at the same time as the 1856 Snow-4 Flying Eagle Cents, i.e. during calendar year 1858. These coins were probably dispersed as part of the original 12-piece proof sets of the year. Per Breen, approximately 100 pieces were originally produced, although far fewer are extant today, some of which are impaired. In proof format, the 1858 Small Letters is significantly rarer than the more famous proof 1856. This important near-Gem displays two markedly different "looks" on both sides. The obverse displays warm orange-tan patina with needle sharp striking definition. Equally well impressed, the reverse exhibits a more subdued, honey tinged sheen. Pleasing reflectivity is seen in the fields at certain angles. A short reverse pinscratch at 9 o'clock and a pair of pale obverse spots are noted.
