1858<1C> Small Letters PR64 PCGS. Low Leaves Reverse. Snow-PT9, die pair 3, dies 2 T3-A. Snow's 2 obverse and T3-A reverse are identified by a broken right upper serif on the U in UNITED and a die line in the denticles beneath the right ribbon end. Snow believes this die pair (along with three others) was distributed to collectors as part of the 12 piece pattern set. Snow estimates 75 to 100 pattern sets were made, and of these, about 20 to 30 sets contained an example of die pair 3. He adds, "There is no question regarding the non-proof format of the die pair 3 pieces seen, however, it is not known with certainty if all coins from this die pair are non-proofs." The present orange-gold example has impressive field reflectivity, and the strike is precise on all design elements. The reverse exhibits an unbroken wire rim. Proof 1858 Small Letters Cents are much more rare than their more publicized 1856 counterparts, and this lovely near-Gem would be an important addition to the specialized Flying Eagle collection.
