1858 1C Small Letters PR62 NGC, Snow-PR4
1858 1C Small Letters PR62 NGC. Snow-PR4, Doubled Die Reverse, Low Leaves Reverse. This unusual die combination is diagnosed by a full U in UNITED, while the bottom of the last A in AMERICA is filled in. The reworked reverse shows a Type 3 die strengthened on the denomination with a Type 1 punch, showing most visibly as minor doubling on the E (notched at bottom of upper serif point, doubled horizontal base).
Indian cent pundit Rick Snow makes the interesting observation that the Small Letters obverse design may have been the work of Anthony Paquet, Mint assistant engraver. Besides the easy characteristic of the separated AM in the legend, Snow mentions that the "head is a bit more boxy" and the "feathers are a bit sharper" than on the Large Letters design. This piece offers clean surfaces that are devoid of carbon, but show minor evidence of contact on each side. Nonetheless a sharp and pleasing coin, and an interesting and elusive variety, to boot. Census (all kinds): 4 in 62, 20 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: James B.
