1858 1C Small Letters MS66 PCGS.
1858 1C Small Letters MS66 PCGS. The 1858 is the final production date of this short-lived small cent type. We have not found an acceptable explanation for the brevity of this series, but Breen (1988) asserts that poor striking quality was at the root of the Mint Director's decision to abandon the Flying Eagle design. The Mint produced 24.6 million small cents in 1858. There are two types, the Large Letters and the Small Letters. As the latter was introduced in the middle of the year, neither of these varieties commands a significant premium in circulated and lower Mint State grades. At the MS66 level, the edge for rarity goes to the Small Letters variety. The current certified population for the Small Letters variety in MS66 is only 11 coins, and there are none finer (10/03). An exquisite copper-nickel cent, the obverse displays a vivid, golden-lilac appearance. The reverse is essentially untoned with radiant mint luster over both sides. The strike is well above average for the type, being full over nearly every feature. There are no abrasions to speak of, only a couple of incidental carbon flecks ate the top of the reverse. Some minimal die clashing (as struck) is also noted on each side. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
