1858 1C Large Letters PR65 PCGS. PR-1, the only known dies. In the opinion of Richard Snow, this is a "beautiful deep mirror cameo example with frosty devices." While we would definitely call this coin a cameo, exactly how deeply the fields are mirrored will have to be left to specialists to decide. Both sides are virtually blemish-free, a fact that confirms this coin's status as one of the finest survivors of this early proof issue. Only one die pair has been confirmed for this issue. The obverse is easily identifiable by the two small die file marks (as produced) that extend from the denticles below the first 8 in the date. A microscopic die file mark (also as struck) extends from the denticles at 11:30 and is diagnostic for the reverse die. This reverse is also found on a few examples of the proof 1858 Small Letters delivery. The 1857, like all proof Flying Eagle Cents, is very rare. The frequently reported mintage of 80 pieces is derived from the number of silver proof sets sold in 1857. Additional specimens were struck and sold as part of the Mint's pattern sets, but these number no more than about 20 pieces. The PCGS Population Report is slightly skewed regarding the number of proof 1858 Large Letters Cents certified. Early population reports combined both Large Letters and Small Letters proofs under one PCGS number. When the two varieties were separated, all previously submitted proof 1858 Flying Eagle Cents were listed as Small Letters examples. Since the certified populations of both proof varieties are small, additional submissions and regrades are slowly making the data more accurate. Die diagnostics for this proof issue are also important in assessing the total number of coins known because there is a group of approximately 20 high grade business strikes with prooflike fields. Although those coins can be deceiving, they are easily attributable as business strikes by a die crack near the eagle's tail. From the Joseph P. Gorrell Collection.
