1858 1C Large Letters PR64 NGC. Probably only about 50
1858<1C> Large Letters PR64 NGC. Probably only about 50 to 100 proofs of this issue were distributed, giving it equal status with the proof 1857 Flying Eagle cents. These are very rare in proof format. Prior to 1992, PCGS certified all proof 1858 Flyers under a single coin identification number. Once they separated these listings and began recognizing the Small and Large Letters varieties, they began keeping track with Small Letters coins listed under the new number. All previous certified coins were accounted by the Large Letters number, giving this variety the appearance that it is more common. It is likely that the Large Letters proofs were distributed by the Mint in 1858, with the Small Letters coins being restrikes produced and sold at a later date.
This near-Gem is fully struck, as one would expect of a proof striking, and the fields are nicely mirrored, particularly the obverse. An abundant amount of sunset-red patina overlays each side with subtle ice-blue accents. There are no distracting marks, and a few degrees of counterclockwise die rotation are seen. A mark in the plastic holder near the eagle's head should not be confused with a defect on the coin. Census: 11 in 64, 12 finer (7/06).
