1858 1C Large Letters MS67 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced 24.6 million Cents in 1858. While this number pales in comparison to the mintage figures of many issues in the Lincoln Cent series, it is a staggering total for the era. In fact, the 1858 boasts the highest mintage in the short-lived Flying Eagle series. The Large Letters and Small Letters varieties of this issue are similar in overall rarity, and both can be located with ease in grades up to and including the MS64 level. Gems, while scarce, are usually available with patience, but Superb Gems are virtually nonexistent in today's hobby. The present survivor is the single finest 1858 Large Letters Flying Eagle Cent at PCGS, and it is tied, but not surpassed, by only one coin at NGC. Neither grading service has graded a single Small Letters example above MS66 (10/02). Lovely orange-brown colors envelop both sides with the most vibrant shadings at the obverse denticles. The surfaces are lustrous and satiny with razor sharp striking definition that is particularly noteworthy for this often poorly impressed type. A faint spot in the obverse field above the eagle's tail is noted solely for pedigree purposes. Perhaps needless to say, this coin would be a centerpiece in any advanced collection. From the Joseph P.
