1858 10C Dime PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. Assigned the important S designation, the Kaufman coin is the single finest proof 1858 dime certified by NGC, and probably the finest existing specimen of the date.
The proof silver coins dated 1858 are not particularly rare with at least 100 of each known today. From 1856 to 1859, population data shows a dramatic annual increase. For dimes, the total NGC census of certified pieces is reported as: 1856 (23), 1857 (34), 1858 (64), and 1859 (182). If a direct link between proof mintage and population could be established, then accurate estimates of earlier proof production could be determined.
The date is slightly right of center with the shield point entirely left of the 1 and the skirt pendant centered over the 5. The final 8 is low and leans to the right. The obverse is lapped with a polished area between Liberty's right facing elbow and body. A short diagonal die line slants up to the right from the left inner corner of the M to a border dentil.
A nearly perfect proof with sharp details, strong cameo contrast, and vibrant toning, this piece has exceptional aesthetic appeal. The obverse has virtually identical toning to the 1858 half dime while the reverse is light gray with peripheral iridescence. Census: 1 in 67 , 0 finer (6/07).
From The Phil Kaufman Collection of Early Proof Sets, Part One. (#4747)

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
