1858<10C> PR64 NGC. Breen (1988) asserts that the Philadelphia Mint produced no more than 80 proof Seated dimes in 1858, but we doubt whether all of these coins had been distributed by the end of the year. Those that remained unsold were most likely melted. This luminous specimen displays faint speckles of milky toning and sharply struck design elements. Some wispy hairlines are noted in the fields, and a pinscratch extends from star 10 to Liberty's left hand. For pedigree purposes, a strikethrough on Liberty's upper legs resulting from a piece of wire embedded in the die is mentioned. Population: 17 in 64, 25 finer (4/05).
