1858 $10 AU58 NGC. The mintage of 2,521 pieces is an attention-grabber for most collectors of 19th century gold. And the 1858 is an issue that is just as rare as the mintage indicates. Some 50+ years ago there was considerable hype by B. Max Mehl about the extreme rarity of the 1858, and unfortunately Walter Breen continued the misinformation about this date in his 1988 Encyclopedia by stating "Possibly 12-15 survive." A more realistic estimate of the number of survivors in all grades is around 30 pieces. The 1858 is also an important condition rarity. At the AU58 level, only one other piece has been so graded with three in Mint condition (the finest MS61). Well struck, as one would expect from a ten dollar from this era, the surfaces display deep reddish color with a hint of blue in the fields. There are no mentionable marks on either side of this lightly abraded coin.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
