1858<$10> AU50 PCGS. Only 2,521 examples of this issue were coined, all on November 23, plus an additional small quantity of Proofs. The curls behind Liberty's neck are incomplete due to die lapping, and appear to be floating in the field, as if some schoolboy had just sheared them off. Walter Breen identified these "floating curl" examples as the business strikes of the year, and others with complete curls were described by Breen as Proofs. This is a key-date issue with most survivors in lower grades with heavily abraded surfaces. This example has light surface marks, as usually encountered, but still retains considerable aesthetic appeal. The fields are substantially prooflike, but it does not qualify as an impaired Proof, but rather a rare business strike example. Due to the rarity of this issue, and the more abundant nature of 1858-O eagles, it is important to examine any 1858 Eagle carefully to ensure that it is not an example of the New Orleans coinage with a removed mintmark. The reverse has diagonal striations from lower right to upper left, most easily visible within the shield stripes. This is an extremely important opportunity for the connoisseur.
From The Stig Ericsson Collection.
