1857 Silver 3C PCGS PF65
A one-in-a-thousand example of this Type 2 three-cent silver issue, with abundant luster that shimmers over gem quality surfaces. A full, bold transfer from the die to planchet is seen in the star and C III of the reverse, although there still are a few areas of minor inconsistency in the strike caused by the thinness of the planchet on which these "trimes" were made.

The silver three-cent pieces of 1851-53 were struck in a composition of .750 silver and .250 copper and tend to be dull or washed out, even the gems. In 1854, and throughout the remaining years of the series, the coins were produced from a more traditional composition of .900 silver and .100 copper, thus finally measuring up to all the other silver denominations of the era. Gems sparkle. (#3704)
