The Seated Liberty design were the last silver half-dimes produced. The design features Liberty seated on a rock and holding a shield and was first conceived in 1835 used first on the silver dollar patterns of 1836.

The Seated Liberty portrait designs, used during the mid to late 19th century from 1836 through 1891, appeared on most regular issue silver United States coinage. Denominations of coins that featured the Seated Liberty design included the half dime, the dime, the quarter, and until 1873 the silver dollar. From 1875 through 1878 the twenty cent piece (the only denomination of it's kind) appeared exclusively with the Seated Liberty design.
