<B>1857-S 50C AU55 NGC.</B></I> Just a little wear is seen on the highest points, and rich light bronze surfaces are clean and problem-free. The still-young San Francisco Mint concentrated on double eagle production in 1857 at the expense of other denominations, and only 158,000 half dollars were struck. These pieces were needed in local commerce, and were spent rather than used as bank reserves. The existing population is generally well-worn and examples in grades of XF and finer are challenging.
