1857-S $5 MS63 PCGS.
1857-S $5 MS63 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. The salvage of the S.S. Central America is primarily known for the recovery of a large number of 1857-S and 1856-S double eagles as well as numerous large gold ingots from the California gold fields. However, a few other coins were also aboard the lost ship and subsequently recovered in 1988. This is the first half eagle we have seen or even heard of for that matter from the Central America. Like the double eagles of the same year, this piece shows similar bright, sparkling luster characteristics. The fields show a sheen that is almost reflective. The color is an even golden-orange and the striking details are fully brought up on each side. Only the most minute abrasions account for the grade of this lovely, lustrous coin. We are uncertain just how many (if any) other 1857-S half eagles have been certified, but PCGS has graded only three other pieces with three coins in higher grades. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
