<B>1857-S $3 XF45 NGC.</B></I> The 1857-S three dollar is scarce in any grade, and is a formidable rarity in Mint State, as most San Francisco Mint threes were used extensively in commerce on the West Coast. David Bowers (2005) writes that: "The vast majority of coins appearing on the market ... have been in grades of VF and EF, not often even AU." The present XF45 example displays bright yellow-gold surfaces with a light green cast. The design elements are sharply defined, except for light wear on portions of the hair and some of the leaf ribbing.
