<B>1857-S $3 AU58 NGC.</B></I> Ex: Princess Collection. Well struck and still somewhat lustrous, with distinct semi-prooflikeness and appealing khaki-gold toning that yields to rose accents in the fields. Faint highpoint wear is noted on the obverse, and scattered small abrasions and wispy hairlines appear on both sides. Nearly the entire mintage of 14,000 pieces was either lightly or heavily circulated, and Uncirculated examples are virtually unobtainable. To date, just four coins are recorded in the population data of NGC and PCGS as having achieved any Mint State grade; and a total of only 14 survivors are certified at AU58 at both services. A pleasing example of this historic San Francisco Mint pre-Civil War issue, almost assuredly coined from newly mined California gold.
