<B>1857-S $3 AU55 NGC.</B></I> 1857-S three dollar coins are generally seen in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades, as San Francisco Mint threes were released into circulation at the time of issue and used extensively in commerce on the West Coast. The population data corroborate this, as most of the examples seen by NGC and PCGS range in grade from Good through Extremely Fine. The two services have graded a mere four Mint State coins. <BR> The Choice AU example offered here displays bright yellow-gold color and traces of luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are better delineated than usually found on this issue, though portions of the hair are smooth. The few marks scattered about are not out of line with what one would expect to find on a coin that saw some light circulation.
