1857-S $20 Spiked Shield MS66 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Variety 20A. SSCA 0740. This die is easily identified by two short die scratches at the lower left corner of the shield. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, 1795-1933, indicate that prior to 1985, the 1857-S double eagle was mostly available in grades of Very Fine to Extremely Fine; few choice pieces were known. The discovery of the S.S. Central America changed the landscape of double eagle collecting. The authors state: "There were more than 5,000 examples of the 1857-S double eagles aboard when the ship sank. Many of the examples found were in the same state of preservation as the day they left the mint."
This Premium Gem survivor displays bright brass-gold surfaces with great luster. A powerful strike translated into excellent definition on the design elements, further enhancing the coin's outstanding eye appeal. Both sides are impeccably preserved. Housed in a gold label PCGS holder. Coin comes with SS Central America display box and certificate of authenticity. PCGS has seen fewer than 10 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
