1857-S<$20> Spiked Shield MS65 PCGS. SSCA 0773. Variety 20A. A beautiful representative of the popular Spiked Shield variety, named for a light die line that crosses the shield's left border. The reverse of this well struck Gem is essentially immaculate, and the obverse is also clean despite a few unimportant ticks on the upper left field. Vibrant cartwheel luster and light pumpkin-orange toning ensure the eye appeal. Despite the recent recovery of the S.S. Republic shipwreck, the S.S. Central America remains the most numismatically significant shipwreck find, chiefly due to its bounty of formerly uncollectible gold assay ingots. Certified in a gold insert PCGS holder.
