Modern salvaging techniques have had a profound effect on the availability of some coin types that were generally thought to be unavailable to the collectors from previous generations. Such was the case with Uncirculated Type One twenties. These pieces were of the utmost rarity until the S.S. Central America was located and salvaged in 1988. Unlike previous shipwreck recoveries, the coins were in the deep waters of the North Atlantic. There was no abrasive action of salt water over the decades, and as a result almost all the coins that sank with full mint luster were recovered in the same condition. A few coins, such as this one, even qualified for an MS65 designation by PCGS.
The surfaces have frosted mint luster, and there is an overlay of hazy reddish patina on each side. Fully struck throughout, the coin is nearly abrasion-free. Population: 24 in 65, 0 finer (4/07).
The original Blanchard packaging accompanies the lot, and includes a dark green cardboard box, an imitation book, a certificate of authenticity autographed by S.S. Central America recovery leader Tommy Thompson, and the present coin, which remains housed in its gold SSCA label PCGS holder.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
