<B>1857-S<$20> Spiked Shield MS66 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 20A. When Bob Evans began studying the double eagles as they were recovered from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, he compiled a die variety study, concentrating on the reverse dies of each piece. Although not a numismatist, Evans has a trained eye for such matters, and kept detailed notes regarding the quantity of each variety that was recovered. PCGS utilized his notes, and indicated the various different varieties when these coins were certified. The Spiked Shield variety has raised die lines through the left border of the shield on the reverse. This example is an impressive representative of that variety, with highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with only a few insignificant marks. The obverse of this piece has a raised die line connecting stars 3 and 4.
