1857-S<$20> MS66 NGC. When the S.S. Central America sank in a hurricane on September 12, 1857, more than 5,400 double eagles sank to the bottom of the sea and 425 persons lost their lives. More than 130 years later, modern technology was largely responsible for the recovery of much of the lost bullion. Because of the depth of the waters in which the coins resided, the luster had remained undisturbed over the decades. As a result, thousands of highly lustrous, like-new 1857-S double eagles are now available to collectors who need the difficult Type One design type--a type previously all but unobtainable in mint condition. This piece is not designated as a S.S. Central America piece, but its appearance is consistent with other coins from that hoard, only finer. This is an exceptional piece. The mint luster is bright and frosted, rolling around the surfaces virtually undisturbed by abrasions. The color is a rich, creamy yellow-gold, and the striking details are fully brought up in all areas. A rare opportunity for the type collector. Census: 16 in 66, 2 finer (8/06).
From The Manistee Collection.
