1857-S $20 MS65 NGC. EX: S.S. Central America. Until the discovery of the S.S. Central America, 1857-S double eagles were mostly available in grades of Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Writing about this issue, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) say: "A few nice specimens were known, but none were choice pieces. The discovery of the S.S. Central America changed the landscape of collecting double eagles profoundly. There were more than 5,000 examples of the 1857-S double eagle aboard when the ship sank. Many of the examples found were in the same state of preservation as the day they left the Mint. The fabulous condition of the coins is what makes them so special; the shipwreck find made early double eagles available in high-grade condition."
The S.S. Central America Gem offered here readily fits the profile outlined by Garrett and Guth. Smooth brassy-gold surfaces yield potent luster, and are devoid of significant marks. An impressive strike emboldens the design elements, further enhancing the coin's fabulous eye appeal. Census: 63 in 65, 23 finer (6/07).
From The Carlton Woods Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
