1857-S $20 MS64 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Variety 20A. SSCA 4044. Magnificent quality for the grade, since the thoroughly lustrous yellow-gold fields are virtually bereft of contact, and even the face and neck display only unimportant ticks. Well struck and impressive.
Like many if not most of the "Spiked Shield" 1857-S twenties, the present near-Gem has a bold 7 in the date. The first and last digits are more deeply entered into the die than the 85. Numismatists have suggested that the date logotype was rocked back and forth while entering the date, which would exert greater force on the outer digits. Encased in a gold label PCGS holder.
From The Arroyo Grande Collection.

Coin Engraver: James B.
