1857-S<$20> Bold S MS63 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Variety 20-B. The recovery of thousands of gold pieces from the foundered steamship means that the 1857-S, formerly all but unavailable in Mint State, is now the most common Type I double eagle. As of this writing (8/06), PCGS alone has certified more than 5,000 examples of the issue, including the numerous varieties. This specimen shows extra outlines on most of the stars, and the Y in LIBERTY and the 1 and 8 in the date show repunching. On the reverse the crossbar of the A in STATES tapers to the left; the top stroke of the E in AMERICA is nearly broken in the center. The surfaces show considerable prooflikeness, but the obverse also displays a faint smoky haze around the upper head of Liberty.
