1857-S<$20> MS62 Prooflike PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Variety 20-A, Spiked Shield. What a miracle that such a coin exists, requiring as it did first being rediscovered at all, then being dredged up from the bottom of the sea and being "conserved," only to emerge with a prooflike surface that likely appears much as this coin did when it plummeted from the dies nearly a century-and-a-half ago. This coin has fields on both sides that are every bit as reflective as on a modern-day proof coin, although there is some light chatter noted as well. This variety shows the characteristic die line to the left of the shield that gives its name. The surfaces are a beautiful light golden-yellow. Three digs on the obverse require mention: one above the eyebrow, one in the field near star 5, and one near stars 11 and 12, which together help account for the grade on this nonetheless delightful and historic coin.
