<B>1857-S $2 1/2 AU50 NGC.</B></I> In the initial years of operation at the San Francisco Mint, the priority was placed on coining double eagles, which were needed by local bankers and traders within the bullion-based economy. Quarter eagles were struck only in limited quantities until 1878. This piece has noticeable golden-brown luster and a decent strike.
