1857$1> PR64 PCGS. Two obverse dies were used to strike proof 1857 dollars. This piece is struck from the obverse die that does not show flatness on the head of Liberty and does show an unfinished area below Liberty's chin, thus earning it the name "Bearded Liberty." While Bowers estimated that somewhere between 50 and 100 proofs are known today in his 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, we believe the number extant at the lower end of that range with probably no more than 60 pieces known as recognizable proofs. This last point is an important one to remember as there are quite a few 1857 prooflike dollars that have been represented as proofs in the past. This piece has fields that are deeply reflective and give this piece the unmistakable appearance of a proof. A slight haze of variegated golden-blue toning covers each side with the mirrors flashing strong through the toning. Population: 10 in 64, 1 finer (9/06).
