1857<S$1> PR63 PCGS. This is a highly desirable Proof issue with strong details, especially on the obverse. The only weakness of note is at the top of the left wing. The reason this strike is so important is that nearly every business strike, if not every one, has Liberty's head completely flat. Current numismatic scholars believe that two obverse dies were used for the coinage of these proofs, the second obverse having the typical flat head of business strikes. This example is representative of the first variety, with an unfinished area of the die below Liberty's chin. Some have called this the Bearded Liberty variety. The surviving number of Proof silver dollars dated 1857 has been estimated between 50 and 100, although some recent estimates have been as low as 25 coins.
This lovely Proof has pale blue, golden-brown, and ivory color over reflective fields. The devices are also somewhat reflective with little cameo contrast. The fields on both sides exhibit several fine hairlines. But keep in mind that this old green-label holder has a number of scratches in the plastic, and these are also reflected in the mirrored fields of the coin, giving the appearance of hairlines that aren't actually there.
