1857 S$1 MS63 PCGS. The 1857 is somewhat similar
1857<S$1> MS63 PCGS. The 1857 is somewhat similar to the 1853. Its relatively large mintage (94,490 pieces) makes it a scarce, but not rare date in circulated grades. In mint condition, the 1857 is one of the more easily obtainable dates from the decade of the 1850s, similar to the 1853, but nowhere near as common as the 1859-O, a hoard date. This is a lovely, one might even say, dazzling example that exhibits strong prooflike fields on each side. Light, hazy toning covers the surfaces, but does not impede the prooflike glimmer. Unevenly struck, as always, because the 1857 dollar was struck from misaligned dies, the stars on the left side of the obverse are strong while those on the right side are not. Population: 9 in MS63, only 9 others are finer (3/05).
