1857<S$1> MS61 PCGS. The 1857 is somewhat similar to the 1853. Its relatively large mintage (94,490 pieces) makes it a scarce, but not rare date in circulated grades. In mint condition, the 1857 is one of the more easily obtainable dates from the decade of the 1850s, similar to the 1853, but nowhere near as common as the 1859-O, a hoard date. PCGS has certified a total of 42 Mint State 1857's (6/05). Like many Mint State examples of this issue, the present coin exhibits a partial prooflike finish, and an uneven strike that is particularly soft around the upper and right (facing) obverse periphery. According to Bowers (1993), the latter feature was caused by non-parallel die alignment. The frosted design elements offer a moderate contrast against the fields, giving a cameo-like effect. Both sides are untoned, save for whispers of peripheral light grayish-tan patina. A few trivial contact marks are scattered about, as are some wispy hairlines in the fields.
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
