1857-O 50C MS65 PCGS. The 1857-O Half Dollar meet
1857-O<50C> MS65 PCGS. The 1857-O Half Dollar meets all the requirements of a classic condition rarity. Its mintage of 818,000 pieces is a bit lower than some of its New Orleans Mint contemporaries, but hardly small enough to signal anything out of the ordinary, and its relative availability in circulated condition continues through the XF grade level. However, demand for silver coinage must have been very high in the Antebellum South, as precious few examples appear to have survived in AU and Uncirculated grades. The presently offered Gem representative is among the finest '57-O Halves extant, being clearly nicer than the MS64 sold in our August 2004 Pittsburgh Sale and exceeded in grade at the major services by just a single MS66 certified by NGC (5/05). The coin itself displays dazzling semi-prooflike luster and is sharply struck with the exception of a couple of isolated star radials. Both sides are layered in beautiful orange and olive-gray patina, while flashes of blue iridescence peek out from the obverse border. Specialists in O-mint silver might have to wait years or even decades before the opportunity to acquire a comparable example comes around again. Population: 1 in 65, 1 finer (5/05).
