1857-O $5 MS63 PCGS. This is the finest known 1857-O Half Eagle. It is unlisted in Winter's 1992 reference on the series, and in fact, nothing was even rumored to exist above AU50+ at that time. While the availability of this issue may have increased slightly at the upper end since that time, experience handling this issue has proved one thing as unchanged in the past ten years: "It is harder to find a visually pleasing 1857-O half eagle than any other New Orleans half eagle struck in the 1850s." This is truly an exceptional coin. The surfaces are softly frosted with a faint glimmer of reflectivity in the fields. The devices are sharply struck throughout and each side has taken on a rich accent of golden-orange patina. The surfaces are remarkably clean for a coin of this grade and we could easily believe an MS64 grade is warranted. The only mark we see that might be useful for pedigree purposes is a short, shallow nick across the bridge of Liberty's nose, and we are not even sure that will show up in auction catalogs from years gone by.From the Ashland City Collection.
