<B>1857-O $20 XF45 NGC.</B></I> The New Orleans Mint struck double eagles each year of the denomination from 1850 until the Civil War curtailed operations after 1861. Not all O-mint dates are equal, however. Those from 1850 to 1853 have small but collectible productions, while those between 1854 and 1861 range from very scarce to extremely rare. The 1857-O, with a mintage of 30,000 pieces, falls into the very scarce category. Since just three pieces have been certified as Mint State as of (2/07), collectors lacking unlimited budgets and the patience of Job must choose a circulated example.
