1857-O $20 MS60 NGC.
1857-O $20 MS60 NGC.<p>The 1857-O is the seventh rarest of 12 New Orleans Double Eagles in terms of overall rarity and eighth in high grade rarity. It is similar to the 1858-O in very high grades (in this case, MS60 and finer), although it is more available in About Uncirculated. At the present time, there have been only three Mint State 1857-O Double Eagles encapsulated by a major third-party service: the incomparable Bass III: 792 coin, graded MS63 by PCGS, that sold for $97,750 in May 2000; an NGC MS62 in a private collection; and this NGC MS60. In addition, a very nice piece was offered as lot 846 in the Stack's June 1995 sale where it brought $19,800. In a market that is now far more appreciative of rare Liberty Head Double Eagles, this piece could sell for even more. Uncommonly well struck, there is little evidence of the striking softness one expects of this issue. Only the first four stars are notably weak. Of course, the date and mintmark were lightly punched in the die, but this is not a function of striking. As always, the fields are bright and prooflike and the coin has a rich green-gold hue. Minimally abraded, we note a few small planchet flaws on each side and a couple of grease stains (as struck) on the lower obverse which should serve well as identifiers for pedigree purposes in the future. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
