1857-O $20 AU58 PCGS. After a paltry original mintage of 2,250 Double Eagles in 1856, the New Orleans Mint stepped production up to the 30,000-coin mark the following year. While the 1857-O is nowhere near as rare as the 1856-O, it is an elusive coin in its own right with an extant Mint State population of only three coins at the major grading services. This just miss AU58 survivor still qualifies for Condition Census standing, although it is not specifically mentioned by Doug Winter in the 1992 book New Orleans Mint Gold Coins: 1838-1909. The ample remaining definition is suggestive of a razor sharp strike--a feature that characterizes most high grade survivors of this issue. Fully prooflike in finish, the otherwise yellow-gold surfaces reveal more deeply set green-gold shadings as the coin turns away from the light. Both sides are a little scuffy from light handling with a few scattered reeding marks, but a shallow planchet void (as produced) in the obverse field between star 13 and the lowermost hair curls on Liberty's portrait is the most obvious pedigree marker.
