<B>1857-O $20 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> The 1857-O double eagle has long resided in the shadows of the three O-mint issues that preceded it, most notably the 1854-O and 1856-O rarities. Of the 30,000 double eagles coined at the New Orleans facility in 1857, only a small percentage survives. Indeed, it is doubtful that more than 150 examples are currently known, just half of one percent of the original mintage. Uncirculated coins are essentially non-existent, so any example that approaches Mint State status takes on even greater importance. This example is an attractive green-gold representative, with traces of wear only on the highest design points. Prooflike surfaces exhibit a moderate quota of the small abrasions that these large gold coins are known for. Although the date and mintmark are both weakly impressed, all remaining design details are boldly rendered. A bit of extra metal along the left reverse border may assist in pedigree tracking.
